Cause of snow accumulation inside the window glass during winter

Why is there snow inside the glass even if the window glass is closed during winter?

There are a few reasons why snow might accumulate inside a window during the winter. One reason is that warm air inside the house can come into contact with the cold surface of the window glass, causing the moisture in the air to condense and form frost or snow on the inside of the glass. This is especially likely to happen if the window is poorly insulated or if there are large temperature differences between the inside and outside of the house. Another reason could be that snow is being blown against the window by strong winds and is somehow finding its way inside around the edges of the window frame. If you're seeing snow accumulation inside your windows, you might try sealing any gaps around the window frame and using weatherstripping or window film to help insulate the glass and reduce the amount of moisture that condenses on it.

What other reasons could there be?

  • Snow might be melting outside and dripping down onto the windowsill, where it could freeze again on the inside of the window.
  • If the window has a leak or is otherwise not properly sealed, snow or ice could be finding its way inside.
  • If the window is located in an area that is particularly prone to drafts, cold air could be blowing directly onto the glass, causing the moisture in the air to condense and form frost or snow.
  • If the window is located near a heat source, such as a radiator, the heat from the radiator could be causing the snow or ice on the window to melt and drip down onto the windowsill, where it could freeze again.
  • In some cases, the snow or ice on the inside of the window may actually be caused by condensation from inside the house, rather than being blown in from outside. This is especially likely if the window is located in a room with high humidity, such as a bathroom or kitchen.
